“During the Consistory I realised I was not the only one who had an uneasy feeling, he said, that Evil was at work in all the commotion going on around the Church. In the sense that if the Church were dozing in a sleep of mediocrity or just concerned with intrigues and rivalries, the devil would have his work cut out for him. But if the waters are being stirred a lot, it means there is a vitality in the Church that Evil wants to hinder. And this vitality is the strength of faith; it is Christian life manifesting itself throughout the world.” And as the emeritus theologian of the papal Household explained, the Pope “is most certainly suffering from the things that were said in the media in recent days, but deep down in his soul there is calm. It is the strength of the Holy Spirit guiding his life and his faith.” “Peter’s special vocation – Cardinal Cottier said – is to sustain the faith of his brothers.
