Today, the Church universal celebrates the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lady.
Master of the Osservanza (c. 1440), Birth of the Virgin
The central panel of the triptych shows the newly born Virgin Mary being washed by midwives in the foreground, with her mother Saint Anne in the bed. In the left wing Saint Joachim is told the news of the birth; in the right wing two women are seen in a domestic setting. The source is The Golden Legend.
* * *The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Impart to your servants, we pray, O Lord ,the gift of heavenly grace, that the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin may bring deeper peace to those for whom the birth of her Son was the dawning of salvation. Through our Lord.
I went to mass this morning at our little Anglican Catholic Church of Canada to celebrate this feast.
We heard almost the same Collect---though Book of Common Prayer language.
GLORY be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty.
O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.
For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
